Essential Auction News

Welcome to the first newsletter of 2015 which looks back at auction activity in December and preceding periods. The auction market was largely unchanged in December, with only marginal differences in the number of lots offered and sold compared with December 2013. The amount raised from auction sales, which saw substantial increases throughout 2014, totalled in excess of £491m for the month; a 3.6% gain on December 2013 and the largest amount achieved in December since 2007.

National Auction Analysis

The commercial auction market started very brightly in 2014, with instructions and sales volumes increasing through the first half of the year. However, growth slowed during the Summer months, and the past few newsletters have all shown a slight fall in activity which resonates in the quarterly figures shown below - lots offered down 5.4% and lots sold down 4% on Q4 2013.

Overall though the commercial market fared comparatively with 2013, and an annual average sale rate of 77.7% and a 15% rise in commercial receipts make positive reading.

In the residential sector, the gavel fell on 21,834 lots during 2014 - a 2.1% increase on 2013. More significantly, this sets a new record for the highest number of residential sales in a calendar year, surpassing the previous high recorded in 2007. We have also seen the amount raised at residential auctions increase throughout the year, often in double-digit percentage terms, and the yearly figures below show the total has broken through the £3bn mark for the first time in 7 years - a fantastic achievement for the industry.
